Hadrian’s Villa and Villa d’Este Half-Day Trip from Rome

1.Hadrian’s Villa and Villa d’Este Half-Day Trip from Rome

★★★★★★★★★★3.5 · 808 reviews · from $118Our pick

Travel from Rome to Tivoli with a local guide, exploring Hadrian’s vast second-century retreat and Villa d’Este’s Renaissance palace and gardens. Guides such as Luigi, Max, and David have led engaging visits, but expect a multilingual group, plenty of walking, and about four hours door to door.

“Hadrian's Villa was not worth it at all as there is nothing to see. On the other hand the Villa D'este was worth every minute. The Fountains are amazing and would recommend for sure. The tour guides were good and polite. I would recommend that if possible to skip the Hadrian's Villa and do only the Villa D'este. You will like it for sure.”

“Fantastic tour. Great way to get an introduction to Rome or to see as much as possible if you have a short stay. Manu was excellent. Both knowledgeable and very friendly. The tour was very flexible allowing you to pick the spots most important to you and spend as much or little time as wanted.”

★★★★★★★★★★4.8 · 486 reviews · 4 hours · from $58Best value

Join a small group and an English-speaking guide such as Rob, Cat, Alberto, or Laura for a four-hour visit to Ostia Antica. Ride the train from Piramide, walk through Roman streets, see baths, mosaics, shops, toilets, and an amphitheater, then stay for the museum, modern Ostia, or the beach.

“I cannot recommend this tour enough!! Our tour guide, Catarina, was incredible. Our family of 7 were the only people on the tour, and we had the Ostia Antica ruins mostly to ourselves - most tourists overlook this area. We went to the beach after the tour as well. This tour was easily one of the highlights of our Italy trip, and the friendliest tour guide by far!!”

4.Catacombs and Roman Countryside Half-Day Walking Tour

★★★★★★★★★★4.5 · 411 reviews · 3 hours (approx.) · from $78

Leave central Rome with a guide such as Marcello, Mariah, or Tatia for San Callisto Catacombs, the Appian Way, Cecilia Metella’s tomb, and ancient aqueducts. This three-hour outing mixes underground history, open-air archaeology, and coach transfers, with a 25-person maximum.

“This tour started with a bus trip to the Catacombs. The trip was interesting to see other parts of Rome besides the central tourist bits. The Catacombs were interesting but not top level exciting. Still worth a look. Probably was expecting a lot of bones but none there. Then had a look at a bit of the Appian Way then to a section of aqueduct. All interesting and well presented and described. Not to much walking, about the right amount. Nice to sit in the bus for short trips as well. Big bus, only a dozen people on it so tons of room. A nice morning.”
